As all you know Korean Peninsula is located in nearby Japan and China. More in detail, Chinese Continental is on the left, Korean Peninsular is in the middle, Japan island is on the right.
From time to time, we, Korean make a joke that we are a sandwich between two Great Powers. And Theses three countries have very closed relationship. Economy, Diplomacy, National Security, Environment.
Specially, Environment perspective, there are interesting points for Korea and Japan, because each county seems to have kind of role. Japan is well known as the earth quake. Everybody knows Fukushima disaster, It looks that Japan protect Korea from lots of earth quake.
Actually it is, Japanese islands are on cliff of the tectonic plates and the islands are dragging under earth crust around few centimeters every year. If there were not the islands, earth quake waves would affect to the peninsular directly.
Maybe, Korean should’ve appreciate it to Japanese until the radiation leak from the nuclear power plant. The Earth quake brought collapse of nuclear fuel rod, it is not closed issue so far. Recently, Japanese government decided to release contaminated water to Pacific Ocean, we are worry about we might eat high radioactive fishes by that.
Other pollution is from China. Air flow in far east Asia moves from west to east called westerlies. Which means, air pollution in China moves to Korea and Finally Japan. It was so critical, Sometimes you can see Korea has almost same air quality as China has.
Air index released normally 0-50 level with good clean air, 50-100 with normal air, and over 100 with bad quality. And I have never seen under 100 level in East coast of China area. When it goes seriously, indicator popped up with 999 level of air quality in China, over 500 in Korea, really crazy. Korea is kind of barrier to Japan in this case, Koreans roles can be air purifier for Japan.
Both issues are so sensitive. Information is limited for public, It is hard to prove where actual pollution is coming from without any scientific evidence.
There was news that NASA sends a special aircraft to Korea for air pollution study. NASA scientist suspect the smog from China is effected to even West coast of the States. The plane can measure density of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compound) and make a 3D dust map of specific area. With that, Scientist try to find any solution for it, hopefully, resultful plan would run in very soon.
I realized again, all environment issue is not local issue, is global issue.
