What National Olympic Medal Score means for Korean
Korea is running elite sports system. If someone selected for a National team member then he or she can get every single support from country. Perfect training centers, well organized training schedules, best coaching staffs, specialized foods are provided, even therapists are ready for them. What they should do is only taking all of them and do their best in their filed.
There are more. If they make good results the gold, silver, bronze medals, then they will get incentive, rewards round 100K USD and pension a 1,000 USD per every month. It is calculated to current value with 600K USD.
It is amazing. As far as I know, Korean incentives are world top class. Matter of course, it could be done by national budget. And the budget is from tax. Politicians are keep saying fiscal cliff, want to increase tax rates but the elite sports system is still running, why?
Korea was developing country just 20 years ago. The brand ‘Korea’ was not popular, nobody knew what the Korea is and where the Korea is. So big sports event (such as Rio de Janeiro Olympic in 2016) was good chance to advertise the brand so that more production, serviced could be sold, more money could be earn from the world. It was kind of investment for Korea economy.
The other thing is national characteristics. Asian is more collective then Westerners, Korean also Asian country. Single achievement of a national player is not single result, Korean does not feel he or she did it, does feel we did it. It is strong empathic to all Koreans.
Somebody said it is kind of propaganda to make citizen away from sensitive public issues. Or somebody said, it is still best way for national prestige for export-oriented Korean economy.
I am not pointing out it is right or wrong. I just want to share how Koreans are thinking it. In my point of view the elite sports system have been running for almost half decade, definitely we are facing on two selections now or very soon, one for keeping the system or the other for chaining the system to individual.
